ISCSLP (International Symposium on Chinese Spoken Language Processing) is a conference for scientists, researchers, and practitioners to report and discuss the latest progress in all scientific and technological aspects of Chinese spoken language processing (CSLP). The idea of having a series of regular conferences devoted to CSLP was a conclusion from a small-group meeting held in December 1997 in Singapore. The meeting was organized and chaired by Professor Chin-Hui Lee, back then who worked at Bell Laboratories, USA; and attended by Professors Tai-Yi Huang and Ren-Hua Wang from mainland China, Professors Chorkin Chan and Pak-Chung Ching from Hong Kong, Professor Kim-Teng Lua and Dr. Haizhou Li from Singapore, and Professors Lin-Shan Lee and Hsiao-Chuan Wang from Taiwan. A Steering Committee, being chaired by Professor Chin-Hui Lee and consisting of the nine members mentioned above, was established to supervise the ISCSLP conferences. It was decided that a bi-annual symposium will be organized and hosted initially by research groups from Asia Pacific regions. Since its inception, ISCSLP has become the world's largest and the most comprehensive technical conference focused on Chinese spoken language processing and its applications. In ISCSLP 2002, a special interest group was formed and known as SIG-CSLP of International Speech Communication Association (ISCA). ISCSLP is now an ISCA and IEEE supported event. The previous 4 conferences were held as the following:

•ISCSLP-2002, Taipei, August 22-24, 2002;

•ISCSLP-2004, Hong Kong, December 15-18, 2004;

•ISCSLP-2006, Singapore, December 13-16, 2006;

•ISCSLP-2008, Kunming, December 16-19, 2008.

The symposium's official language is English.
